Ich gedenke einem klugen, humorvollen und dynamischen Mann, den ich auf einer Studienreise nach Ischevsk begleiten durfte und der mich mit seiner Art sehr inspiriert hat. Selbst jetzt zaubert mir das Erlebte bei all der Wehmut ein Lächeln auf mein Gesicht. Mein Beileid gilt der Familie. Judith Moll

Liebe Familie Walsh,

die Notiz von Gary's Tod stimmt mich traurig und ruft gleichzeitig viele schöne Erinnerungen wach.

Meine Zeit an der Lüneburger Universität (ob als Studentin oder Mitarbeiterin im English Departement) hatte Gary entscheidend mitgeprägt und maßgeblich zu meinem, nicht nur fachlichen sondern vor allem auch menschlichen, Werteverständnis beigetragen.

Typically Gary ist (und bleibt):
- seine stets (tatsächlich wie sinnbildlich) offen gestandene (Büro)Tür
- fachlich anspruchsvolle aber dabei jederzeit menschlich wertschätzende Haltung
- Wohlwollen & gelebte Hilfsbereitschaft
- sein typically British humour - über sich selbst Witze (aber nie schadenfroh über Andere lustig) machen
- stets mit Herzblut und manchmal auch mit landestypischen Mitbringseln durchgeführte Seminare
- ein unglaubliches Namensgedächtnis
- legendäre pub nights
- eine mitreißende Neuseeland-Leidenschaft
u.v.m

...einfach einmalig!


Möge Ihnen, liebe Fam. Walsh, das Teilen vieler schöner Erinnerungen wie ein Lichtstrahl die dunklen Wolken der Trauer durchbrechen!

Dear Christine, Dear Robbie,
Dear Walsh Family,

I was very sad to hear about the loss. I don't know if you remember me or not, but I worked with your father for many years in the Language Center. He was a great boss and colleague, and I owe a lot to him. In those days, it was difficult to have two young children, no state daycare, and a full-time job. Your dad was very understanding and went out of his way not only to accommodate me, but just about anyone who went through his door, which was always open. I feel as if he knew just about everyone at the university by name and knew which soccer teams they supported. He always told me that the most important people apart from students at the university were those working in the Hausdienst and taking care of the campus. He knew how to get things done and gave second chances to students who needed and deserved them. I have never met anyone who loved David Lodge as much as your father, and he taught the novel Changing Places so many times, I think Lodge should have shared some of his German royalties with your dad. Ha. I just wanted to let you know that he was very proud of you both and spoke of you often. I'm sure you know that. The university will be publishing an obit for him. I think it will probably come out on Saturday. If you need a copy, please let me know. Your dad was certainly one of the good ones. All the best, Sabrina
